Vietnam Women’s Union welcomes Vice President of Women’s International Democratic Federation

On the afternoon of March 27th, 2015, at the headquarters of the Vietnam Women's Union (VWU), Vice President of the VWU Nguyen Thi Tuyet received Ms. Skevi Koutra Koukouma - member of the Parliament of Cyprus, General Secretary of the Pancyprian Federation of Women’s Organization (POGO), Vice President of the Women’s International Democratic Federation (WIDF) on the occasion of her attendance at the 132nd Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly (IPU-132) in Hanoi.

At the meeting, VWU Vice President Nguyen Thi Tuyet shared information about VWU efforts and contributions to the WIDF since joining the Federation0 in 1946. She also expressed the appreciation and gratitude from Vietnamese women and people to the WIDF and its member organizations for their kind and precious support and assistance to Vietnam in general and the VWU and Vietnamese women in particular during the two resistance wars against the French and American aggressors in the past. Especially, in June 2014, 6 WIDF member organizations issued a joint statement expressing their concern over China’s illegal placement of its drilling rig in the Vietnamese waters and WIDF respect for the principle of state sovereignty and international laws. Besides, Ms. Nguyen Thi Tuyet also provided updated information o­n VWU key activities in recent years as well as in the coming time, including the organization of International Forum o­n Women, Peace and Development, to be held tentatively in October 2015 o­n the occasion of VWU 85th anniversary, review of 20-year implementation of Beijing Platform for Action and other women related commemorations and anniversaries this year.

Ms. Skevi Koutra Koukouma appreciated the VWU’s active and responsible participation in WIDF activities, particularly in the capacity of the Asia Pacific Regional coordinator in the past. She also highlighted the importance of international solidarity in mobilizing the support of people in the world for national issues, especially for such issues as national sovereignty and territorial integrity. She showed her expectation and belief that the VWU will continue making contributions to WIDF development.
