Vietnam Women’s Union President Ha Thi Khiet visited Can Tho city Centre of receiving and assistance difficult women and children

In visiting the southern provinces on 7th June, 2006, Madame Ha Thi Khiet, member of Party Central Committee, VWU’s President, Chairwoman of National committee for the Advancement of Vietnamese women, visited Can Tho City Centre of receiving and assisting women and children in difficulties (AFESIP Centre).

The President of Can Tho City WU, Ms. Luu Thi Ngoc Anh said, from its establishment (in September, 2005) to present, AFESIP Centre has received 36 women and children ranging in ages from 14 to 46. Most of them have had to cope with difficult situations such as working from an early age, of which 23 in high-risk category for sexual abuse and labor force; 11 were prostitutes; 3 were actually sexually abused. There are 28 women, children’s hometowns in Can Tho City, the remaining in Ben Tre, Da Nang, Vinh Long, An Giang, Kien Giang, Ca Mau, Soc Trang and Hau Giang. Here, they learn to become tailors, making handicrafts , hair making etc. Most of the trainees have been educated from the 5th form or more, there are two trainees who were illiterate were supported to eliminate illiteracy. At present, among the 7 trainees who graduated in this Center, some can earn a sustainable income by doing the jobs they had been trained here.

 

Visiting the trainees’ dormitory and workshop, talking to them and listening to Center’s report, President Ha Thi Khiet praised the efforts made by the authorities and carders of the Centre and Can Tho WU. During 9 months, AFESIP Centre has conducted practical activities, initially helping the women who have been in a difficult situation. It is a reliable place for women. This is o­ne of the practical expressions of the Can Tho City WU, in honor of the Women’s Union Congresses at all levels towards 10th National Women Congress.

 

On the occasion to Can Tho, President Ha Thi Khiet visited Dieu Hien Trading and Construction Company Limited, Binh An Processing Aquatic Product Company Limited. These are two among various enterprises led by women in Can Tho , contributing to enhance Can Tho City’s social – economic development.
