Vietnam Women’s Union activities to celebrate International Women’s Day - 8 March
The event was attended by Mr. Nguyen Thien Nhan, Member of the Politburo, President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) Central Committee; Ms. Ha Thi Khiet, Secretary of the Party Central Committee (PCC), Head of the PCC Commission for Mass Mobilization; Ms. Nguyen Thi Binh – former State Vice President, President of the Kovalevskaia Prize Committee; representatives of ministries, agencies, mass organizations and more than 100 delegates who are Vietnam Hero Mothers, Heroines of the People's Armed Forces, Heroines of Labor in the anti-American resistance war, outstanding representatives of the “Three Responsibilities” movement, Long-haired army, winners of the Kovalevskaia award, and VWU leaders and staff.
Speaking at the event, VWU President Nguyen Thi Thanh Hoa reviewed the heroic traditions of different Vietnamese women generations, from the Trung sisters to the modern periods, particularly during the “Three Responsibilities” and “Long-haired army” movements, which contributed to the country’s independence and unity.
On behalf of the Party and State leaders, Mr. Nguyen Thien Nhan, member of the Politburo, President of the VFF Central Committee acknowledged and highly appreciated contributions of different women generations to the national construction and defense as well as the role of the VWU at all levels inimplementing emulation movements, programs and activities, particularly in giving policy advice to ensure women’s rights and legitimate interests, in timely honoring outstanding women groups or individuals, ect. He suggested that the VWU needs to further promote its representation role in order to facilitate Vietnamese women in general and women scientistsin particular to continue bringing into play their talent and intellect for women development and gender equality.
At the ceremony, the participants had an opportunity to exchange with outstanding representatives of the “Long-haired army” and the “Three responsibilities” movements - two typical patriotic movements of Vietnamese women in the anti-American resistance war and to witness the 2014 Kovalevskaia Award conferred to a group of scientists, researchers and technicians of the Histoembryology Division - Hanoi Medical University, and the Cornea Faculty - National Eye Hospital, for their research on using cell technology for the treatment of ocular surface damages and to Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Kim Lan, former Vice Dean of the Agro-forestry College - Thai Nguyen University, who has made outstanding achievements in teaching and research in veterinary science which have been applied effectively in life.
This ceremony is among a series of events held by the VWU to celebrate the 1975th anniversary of the Trung sisters' Uprising, 105th anniversary of International Women's Day, 55th anniversary of the Long-haired army and the 50th anniversary of the “Three responsibilities” movement. Earlier, on the afternoon of March 6th, at the Presidential Palace, State Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan received the delegation. At the meeting, the State Vice President asserted that the delegates are the symbol of Vietnamese women’s fine traditions of “Heroism, undauntedness, faithfulness and resourcefulness” and hoped that they would set good examples to inspire future generations to carry on the traditions and make further contribution to the country renovation process
On this occasion, on March 6th, the VWU opened an exhibition entitled “Two Sisters - Two Front lines”, co-organized by the Vietnamese Women’s Museum, Southern Women’s Museum and

“Long-haired army” is the common name for the anti-American movements of women in the South of “Three Undertakings” Movement was launched by the Vietnam Women's Union on March 22nd, 1965 with 3 contents: Undertaking production and business in replacement of men who went to battlefield; Undertaking household chores, so that men forks can keep their mind on fighting at the front; and Undertaking fighting support activities and event fighting when necessary. Then the movement was renamed “Three Responsibilities” Movement by late President Ho Chi Minh. |
