Vietnam has enjoyed confidence and been elected to various positions and agencies of the UN, leaving many deep impressions, helping to promote the role of the UN and multilateralism, and showing its responsibility towards global security, peace and development.

Since officially joining the UN on September 20, 1977, Vietnam-UN cooperation has helped to protect and promote national interests, especially in maintaining and reinforcing a peaceful and favourable environment for national development; and helped Vietnam deepen ties with other countries, partners and international friends. Vietnam is always mentioned as a member ready to take part in the UN’s common efforts to deal with international and regional peace and security issues and to promote human rights.

Vietnam actively took part in negotiations and signed the Nuclear Weapon Ban Treaty in 2018 and is one of the first countries to have ratified the treaty. Vietnam has dispatched 243 military officials to UN peacekeeping missions in South Sudan, the Central African Republic, and the UN Department of Peace Operations; and implemented three level-2 field hospitals at the UN peacekeeping mission in South Sudan. Vietnam is one of the countries with the highest rates of women participation.

Vietnam was elected as a non-permanent member of UN Security Council for the 2020-2021 term with a record high number of votes. In its second stint in the UN’s most important body, Vietnam has made substantive contributions to the negotiation process to seek solutions to issues of international concern and has promoted bilateral ties with members of the council.

In its presidency in January 2020 and April 2021, Vietnam managed to successfully organised notable events such as the open debate on the UN Charter and the discussion on ASEAN-UN cooperation, the first of its kind in history at the UN Security Council.

Vietnam is praised by the UN and the international community as a prime example of success in realising the Millennium Development Goals and an active country in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on climate change.

Vietnam and the UN are actively implementing the One Strategic Plan for the 2017-2021 period within the framework of the One UN initiative. Vietnam is also working with the UN Coordinator Office and UN funds and programmes to formulate the Vietnam-UN sustainable development cooperation framework for the 2022-2026 period and cooperation programmes between Vietnam and the UNDP, UNFPA and UNICEF for the 2022-2026 period.

During the battle against COVID-19, Vietnam has proactively and effectively coordinated with the UN. Vietnam’s proposal to select December 27 as the International Day of Epidemic Preparedness was approved by the UN General Assembly with 112 countries voting in favour. Vietnam contributed US$50,000 to the World Health Organisation’s COVID-19 Response Fund and US$500,000 to the Covax Facility. Notably Vietnam received and successfully treated a UN staff member infected with COVID-19 under the MEDEVAC mechanism and is working towards the establishment of a MEDEVAC centre in Vietnam. The UN has also provided active support and many recommendations to help Vietnam in fighting the virus.

With a history of more than 75 years, the UN has demonstrated itself as an indispensable organisation in world politics, towards peace, development and social progress for all nations. With the orientation of proactively participating in and promoting its role at multilateral mechanisms, Vietnam has determined fostering ties with the UN as one of the focuses in its multilateral foreign policy and extensive international integration efforts to enhance the country’s position.
