Since joining the APEC Women Leaders Network (WLN) in 1998, Vietnam has actively participated in the network's activities, sharing its experiences in raising the role of mass organistation in helping women escape from poverty and build small- and medium-sized enterprises.

Talking with a Vietnam News Agency reporter on the threshold of the 11th WLN Meeting to be held in Ha Noi from Sept. 19-22, Nguyen Thi Thanh Hoa, member of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee cum Vice Chairwoman of the Vietnam Women's Union, said that Vietnam's active participation in WLN has been acknowledged and highly valued by other members.

The woman activist revealed that Vietnam will emphasise the social significance of combining economic development with social equality at the up-coming WLN meeting, entitled "Towards a dynamic community - Strengthening competitiveness of businesswomen for sustainable and prosperous development."

Over the past years, the Vietnam Women's Union Central Committee has implemented strategies and programmes to help women open and run their business, so as to realise the WLN's objective of including gender issues into the APEC's projects and policies, as well as providing women with more exchange and cooperation opportunities in the APEC.

Women's unions at all levels have made proposals to the State regarding the making of laws and policies to ensure that gender issues receive due attention.

They have taken advantage of domestic and foreign resources to organise training courses for women on business skills, legal and professional knowledge.

The organisations have also worked to help women access credit loans for production development, trade promotion and market expansion.
