Vice Chairwoman of the State Mme. Truong My Hoa worked on gender issue and the drafting of Gender Equality Law.

On Nov 10,2005, Vice Chairwoman of the State Mme. Truong My Hoa worked with the National Assembly’s Social Affairs Committee, the Vietnam Women’s Union (VWU), National Committee for the Advancement of Women (NCFAW) and the Family and Gender Institute (under the Vietnam Social Sciences Institute) regarding gender issues and gender equality practice.

Mme. Truong My Hoa highly comment the report made by representative of the Family and Gender Institute o­n gender – related issues, current situation and problems to be solved as well as the report presented by Mme. Ha Thi Khiet, VWU President and NCFAW Chairwoman o­n gender equality related recommendations to the Party and the State and the progress in drafting Gender Equality Law. She also praised VWU and the Gender Equality Law Drafting Committee for their efforts in analyzing situation and causes and making recommendations in the draft to ensure gender equality. She fully agreed with the 10 recommendations made by VWU. o­n the other hand, she pointed out a number of tasks that require further emphasis by VWU and NCFAW, namely the enhanced activities to change awareness o­n gender equality; a review of impacts by comprehensive renovation of the country and the market economy o­n gender equality over the last 20 years; inputs for the review of the Strategy for the advancement of the Vietnamese women; and study o­n challenges in women mobilization in current situation.


Concerning the Gender Equality Law, Mme. Hoa suggested the Drafting Committee to make further consideration of several issues in relation to the Law’s comprehensiveness, accommodation of relevant viewpoints and ideas o­n the law and the name of the Law, and communication to raise public awareness o­n gender equality and o­n the Law through studies and reply to controversial matters; heightening the capacity of the suggested National Fund for Gender Equality and the National Research and Information Center for Gender Equality; persistence in retirement age issue; appointing a capable state management body o­n gender equality, which might be upgraded NCFAW or a suitable line ministry.

Mme. Ha Thi Khiet expressed her thanks to Vice Chairwoman of the State Truong My Hoa and indicated to integrate her comments to the next draft and to ensure the drafting timeline and quality of the Law.
