UN project on drugs and HIV control for ethnic minorities launched
A project on drug abuse prevention and HIV control for Vietnamese ethnic minorities was launched in Hanoi on January 29 by the State Committee for Ethnic Minorities and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime.
The project will be carried out in 2008 and 09 in four northern mountainous provinces of Son La, Lao Cai, Dien Bien and Yen Bai, building on the results of two previous projects from 2002 to 2006.
Under the new project, surveys on HIV incidence and drug abuse among Vietnamese ethnic minorities will be conducted to be followed by programmes on community-based HIV and drug abuse prevention and detoxification.
The project will also assist local police in fighting the trading, stockpiling and use of drugs.
