A workshop held in Hanoi on May 27, on ways of working with the UN in the future to advance gender equality for the 2009-11 period.

The participants focused on a number of measures to deal with the traditional prejudice against the social role women play and other difficulties in ensuring gender equality.

The workshop heralded the beginning of a joint initiative on the issue, signed in March by the Vietnamese Government and the UN with a total budget of 4.5 million USD over three years, to help enforce the Law on Gender Equality and the Law against Domestic Violence.

The programme has set three major targets that will improve the nation’s ability to make the laws more effective, expand partnerships and increase moves both inside and outside of Government that will ensure gender equality. The programme will also help with the gathering of evidence to complement a better gender equality database and combat domestic violence.

Participants at the workshop were of the view that now is the time to launch the programme to supplement the Government’s determination to ensure gender equality, after the latest decree issued on May 19, which will come into effect on July 15.

In addition to the Ministry of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs, which sponsored the workshop, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the General Statistic’s Office will also take part in the programme.
