UN aid for population, housing census in VN

The United Nations will help monitor Viet Nam’s population and housing census to be carried out from April 1-15.

Thirty staff from the UN’s women’s, children’s and population funds, plus UN Volunteers, will join monitoring activities in 21 province and cities during the census.

This was the first time the UN had helped monitor a Viet Nam census.

The monitoring trips aimed to advocate for and reinforce the importance of a national census, UN Resident Co-ordinator in Viet Nam John Hendra said.

This would encourage more efforts and resources to be made available by Government authorities at all levels, thereby helping to ensure the quality and success of the census.

"Supporting the 2009 census is a key priority for the UN as it will provide the Government with the detailed information required to undertake more robust socio-economic development planning for the next 10 years," Hendra said.

The UN Population Fund would contribute US$3 million to the total cost of the census, which is around $33 million. The census result will be announced in the third quarter of 2010.

Viet Nam has, since 1975, carried out three national population censuses: in 1979, 1989 and 1999.
