Top World Bank official praises Vietnam’s growth

World Bank Country Director Klaus Rohland praised Vietnam’s achievements last year, saying the people and government have shown the world their determination to build the country.

Klaus Rohland made the comment at an interview with the RFA radio, the Vietnam News Agency reported.

Vietnam’ economic growth in 2005 reached 8.4 percent, he said, adding that the Southeast Asian country had also succeeded in its social reform programs.

According to him, the number of poor Vietnamese people had reduced dramatically from 60 percent of its population in 1995 to 20 percent in 2005.

Vietnam also had a strong chance to be admitted to the World Trade Organization this year, the WB official said.

The German newspaper New Germany o­n Monday also praised the continuously high economic growth in Vietnam in recent years.

Vietnam's economic success was firstly based o­n a young, skilled and ambitious workforce. Its literacy rate was now nearly 93 percent, quite high compared to the average level in the world, the paper said.
