Thu Cuc wins first gold medal of National Sports Games

Nguyen Thi Thu Cuc from Can Tho has become the first athlete to win a gold medal at the national track and field contest at the National Sports Games, according to the Sports Daily.

The newspaper reported Thu Cuc clinched a gold medal in women’s heptathlon o­n September 8 with a total fo 5,277 points. o­n the first day of competition, Thu Cuc won four events, including 100 metre hurdles, 200 metre sprinting, shot put and high jump, and hoped to break her previous national record of 5,350. However, o­n the second day, Thu Cuc won o­nly 800 metre running. She lost to Le Thi Hanh Phuc and Kim Phuc in long jump and javelin.

Le Thi Hanh Phuc from Hai Duong finished runner-up with a total of 4,745 points and Nguyen Thi Dao from the Army team was third with a total of 4,697 points.


On the same day, the qualifying round of men’s 1,500 metres and semi-finals of men’s 400 metre hurdles took place.


The contest continued o­n September 9 with 100 metres, long jump, shot put, high jump, and 400 metres of men’s decathlon, women’s pole vault, men’s 3,000 metres, men’s javelin, women’s 10,000 metre walk and women’s javelin.
