THE THIRD ISTANBUL SUMMIT 2016 "RECONSIDERING GENDER EQUALITY AND PEACEFUL SOCIETIES”

CALL FOR ACTION

 

The third Istanbul Summit was held in Bangkok o­n 7-8 May, 2016, bringing together over 100 civil society organizations (CSOs) and international organizations with 300 participants, including MPs, from 33 countries.

Acknowledges that women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership is o­nly possible with an active participation in the political parties. Women in political decision-making positions play a crucial role in implementing the laws regarding women’s empowerment. It is important to keep in mind that in most of the cases we have enough laws regarding women’s rights and empowerment, but that their is a deep lack in the implementation of those;

Reminds that law-making process should be open through public hearings;

Prioritizes the education of the girl child. Without a doubt, education is nevitable for development. Within the education, the education of the girl child has a particular importance. o­nly educated women are able to fight for their rights and raise up their voices;

Underlines that the number of women who are highly qualified is too small- talking about giving women a seat is not effective, as long as they are not qualified for these seats and are not be able to participate actively;

Highlights the importance of gender sensitive education at all levels. Particularly mothers play a crucial role in the education of boys. In this line, it is to mention that a gender-sensitive training of personal, who are active in conflict areas, is very important;

Calls governmental stakeholders to regulate their budget in a gender-sensitive approach;

Recalls that, in order to be effective, the political decisions makers need to fight against all forms of violence against girls, women and elderly people. Particularly child marriage must be eliminated. Again, laws are not enough- Girls must be encouraged to stand up for their rights and report any kind of crime against them;

Urges governmental and non-governmental stakeholders, especially the women to act together to prevent conflict situations, bearing in mind that girls, women and elderly people make up the most vulnerable group in conflict situations;

Emphasizes that the international experience sharing between women in decision-making positions should be strengthened. Around the world, there are best practice examples for women’s empowerment and full participation. Seeing these kind of role models will help to mobilize girls and women to stand up for their rights and enhance women’s empowerment;

Reminds that war situations are strengthening the capacities of women. Under extreme situations the work load of women is increasing. Therefore, it is important that women in conflict situations have got access to an education which enables them to face and overcome the problems they have to deal with. Such kind of capacity building will empower women and give them the tools to be independent;

Expresses the importance of religious leaders in mobilizing the society. Religion should not be ignored;

Urges that the recommendations of the Summit should be hand out to decision-makers. These demands are the rights of girls and women. It should be kept in mind, that not o­nly women are fighting for women’s rights and empowerment. Women’s full and effective participation will be o­nly possible with the support of men;

Welcomes the work of UN for people in conflict situations and calls governmental and non­governmental stakeholders to strengthen the international corporation in the area of conflict prevention and humanitarian aid.
