The Project “Strengthening Vietnamese Capacity for Sustainable Reintegration of Returning Migrants Women”

“This is a very important project for the Vietnam Women's Union (VWU) which helps to protect the benefits and rights of women and children” – shared Ms. Nguyen Thanh Cam, Director General of Law and Policy Department, Project Director.

Beside positive aspects, the increasing international migration also leads to many problems at both national and international levels. With the function of representing the legitimate rights and interests of women at all strata, the VWU always strives to protect the interests of repatriated migrant women and their family members, especially children.

A relatively large number of Vietnamese citizens is reported to migrate abroad each year, reaching over 500,000 people, in which about 30% females. Every year, there are tens of thousands of Vietnamese citizens, of which 90% being women, get married with foreigners.

Upon returning to Vietnam due to different reasons, women migrants face with various difficulties in integrating into the community. Some are unemployed or underemployed because they cannot apply in a proper way the skills and experiences gained from abroad to the domestic labor market. Beside, lack of legal or psychological advice for the repatriates to solve their own as well as their children’s problems can push them to poverty and vulnerability.

That is why the project was designed and implemented to support Vietnamese returnees including married and labor migrant women and their families to ensure sustainable reintegration.

 Particpants in the TOT course

Since the project launching workshop in March, 2020, although Vietnam and other countries are working hard to fight against the Covid-19 epidemic, important activities of the project such as survey, policy advocacy seminars, design and establishment of “One Stop Support Office” (OSSO) in 5 provinces have been implemented thanks to great efforts and determination of the VWU.

From September 14 – 16, a TOT course on the  operation and consultation procedures at OSSO was organized by VWU, IOM and Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA). The trainers are experts with extensive experience and skills in operating consultation rooms in Vietnam and many years working with women in difficult circumstances, particularly victims of gender-based violence.

This is an opportunity for project staff of the Women's Union in 5 provinces/cities (i.e. Hanoi, Hai Duong, Hai Phong, Can Tho and Hau Giang) and Central VWU to gain relevant knowledge and skills...

Many important Project activities have been carried out despite the Covid-19 epidemic

In particular, there were a practice session and a field visit to the effective on-going consultation room models in Hanoi.

Ms. Nguyen Thanh Cam hoped the participants and the WU staff will make their best efforts to help the repatriating women and their family members to successfully reintegrate to community.
