The ceremony to confer the Merit Medal “For the Development of Women in Vietnam” to Mr. Ian Howie.

In the after noon of the new year event December 30th , 2008, the central of Vietnam Women’s Union organized a ceremony to confer the Merit Medal “For the Development of Women in Vietnam” to Mr. Ian Howie, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFP) Representative in Vietnam.

Mr. Ian Howie was born in August 25th 1945 in Australia. He is an experienced expert of the Australian Government and International Organizations and he is also a manager in many different fields, such as economic, labour, employment, communication education, human resources development. In October 2004, Mr. Ian Howie was appointed to be the Representative of the United Nation Population Fund in Vietnam.

 

After more than 4 years working in Vietnam, he and his UNFPA partners and Vietnamese organs, organizations have established successfully the 7th National Co-operation Program between Vietnam and UNPFA in 2006-2010 period with the priority of Population and Reproductive Health to contribute to implementing Vietnam socio-economic development target. He has put forward strategically issues about population, immigration, family violence, reproductive rights and 2009 population census…He contributed in mobilizing successfully 6.5 million USD for population- family planning program, HIV/AIDS prevention, gender equality, family violence prevention in key provinces and improving the capacity of Vietnamese administrative organs and organizations in Vietnam. He was constructive in mobilizing resources for initiatives of safe motherhood and reproductive health care for ethnic minorities and poor people, directly contributed to the success of Vietnam being o­n top of reorganizing the United Nations in term of developing successfully an UN’s Joint Program, the budget and the human resources for the Joint program and a general guidelines for UN’s Program and Project Management. He was the main responsible person for the Working Group of gender of the UN in Vietnam and produced the framework documents for the UN’s joint program o­n Gender equality in Vietnam. This program was approved for funding by Spanish governmental for Millennium Goals (one of 14 approved documents in total of 136 submitted program framework documents).

 

He has always cared for and supported Vietnamese women. Mr. Ian Howie and his UNFPA partners have helped the Vietnam Women’s Union mobilize the support resource from UNFPA, Swiss government…to archive the activities of 7th program cycle, contributed in improving the

poor women’s life in the 7 key poor provinces by improving their reproductive health knowledge through integrated population communication /reproductive health care/ credit and saving and gender equality groups.

 

In recognition of these achievements, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Thanh Hoa, President of the Vietnam Women’s Union expressed thanks and conferred the noble Merit Medal “For the Development of Women in Vietnam” for Mr. Ian Howie.
