Swedish diplomat honoured for helping Vietnamese women

Swedish Minister Councilor Jan-Olov Agrell on December 1 was presented with the insignia “For the Cause of Vietnamese Women’s Development” by the Vietnam Women’s Union (VWU).

Jan-Olov Agrell, who is head representative of the Swedish Embassy’s Co-operation and Development Programme, was honoured in recognition of his contributions to boosting friendship and co-operation between the two countries, especially supporting a project o­n gender equality and promoting women’s capacity in economic development. He has been actively involved in VWU’s initiatives to help rural women in developing business and job generation.


Jan-Olov Agrell has worked in Vietnam since the 1980s for the Bai Bang Paper Mill Project. He took part in developing the National Strategies for Co-operation Development between Sweden and Vietnam for the 1999-2003 and the 2004-2008 period. He has been head of the Swedish embassy’s Co-operation and Development Programme since 2002.

Since 1987, the Swedish Co-operation and Development Programme has provided 17 million Swedish Krona to help improve Vietnamese women’s lives and positions. (VNA)
