Supporting 50,000 households affected by fish deaths, drought and saltwater intrusion

Vietnam Fatherland Front and its 8 member organizations on the morning of the 19th of May, signed a Coordination Program to support millions of people affected by drought, saltwater intrusion and massive fish deaths.



According to the signed program, appealing for donations would be urgently conducted within o­ne month and finishes before June 30, 2016.All support will be provided before July 31, 2016.

1. Regarding drought and salinity intrusion situation, a preliminary assessment shows thatabout 450 thousand of households, or 1.8 million people, half of which is children, have been affected. The signed program targets to support 45 thousands of poorest households (accounting for 10%) affected by saltwater intrusion in the Mekong River delta and drought in the Central Highlands and South Central Coast.

2. Regarding massive fish deaths, as shown by statistics, 12,500 fishing vessels with 63 thousand workers are impossible to saildue to this phenomenon in the central provinces. Therefore, fishermen’s households encounter many difficulties in daily life. Their children cannot go to school. Nine organizations agreed to support in cash and kind, to buy health insurance, fishing equipment, books for 6 thousand most severely affected fishermen’s households.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Politburo Member, Chairman of Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee Nguyen Thien Nhan affirmed that the signing of 9 organizations is to create a more synchronous and effective cooperation in support of people to overcome the losses. Concurrently, President Nguyen Thien Nhan called o­n people nationwide and employees to donate o­ne day of income to help farmers and fishermen overcome difficulties and facilitate their agricultural and fishery production condition in the coming time. The signatories include: Vietnam Women’s Union, Vietnam Farmer’s Union, Vietnam General Confederation of Labour, Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, the Red Cross, Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Vietnam Fisheries Association.
