Students to participate in Stockholm Junior Water Prize

21/08/2006
Three 12th graders from Ha Noi left their home city on Aug. 15 for the Stockholm Junior Water Prize (SJWP) to be held in Sweden from Aug. 19-26.

Nguyen Thi Tuyet Trinh, Nguyen Van Thinh and Nguyen Dang Phuc Long will compete with 62 other students from 29 countries worldwide, with a project to improve traditional water filters at households by using Cyperus Inoolucrantus (Cay Thuy Truc) and Flocculant.

Their project had previously won the first prize at the annual national competition on solutions to improve water quality and protect water resources, which was jointly organised by Viet Nam's Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and the Science and Life newspaper.

Test results show that the iron content in water purified by these filters dropped from 8.9 mg per litre to 0.5 mg per litre, meeting Viet Nam's standard for safe water. The filters also prove their advantages due to their low costs and installation simplicity.

The SJWP, launched by the Stockholm Water Fundation, is the most prestigious international award for water research projects held for high school students.

This is the third time Vietnamese students have taken part in the competition, which is part of the Stockholm Water Prize organised annually in Sweden since 1994.
