Role by women and families in traffic safety promoted

On the afternoon of July 24, the Vietnam Women's Union(VWU) and the National Traffic Safety Committee held the signing ceremony of the jointcommunication and mobilization program "Women participating in ensuring traffic safety for the happiness of each family" for the 2017-2022 period.

The ceremony was attended by VWU President Nguyen Thi Thu Ha and Minister of Transport Truong Quang Nghia together with the two agencies’ leaders and managers.

The joint communication and mobilization program "Women participating in ensuring traffic safety for the happiness of each family" aims at raising awareness, creating positive changes in self-enforcement of traffic lawand building up “traffic culture” amongVWU’s members,women and their family members, thus contributing to reducing the number of traffic accidents in localities. The program is inter-linked with other nationwide programs, namely the National Target Program o­n building New Countryside and the VWU Campaign o­n building families of 5 without-s and 3 clean-s. It also focuses o­n the advocating for policies of supporting women affected by traffic accidents.

According to Minister of Transport Truong Quang Nghia, women accounting for more than 50% of the population violate traffic safety law at a much lower percentage. He acknowledged the importance of women’s role in ensuring traffic safety in Vietnam and appreciated the VWU’s practical activities in promoting women’s participation in traffic safety. He also urged the VWU to pay attention to replicating successful models o­n traffic safety, including the initiative of providing helmets of special design to Thai women.

According to President Nguyen Thi Thu Ha, the VWU would focus o­n a number of programs such as "Drink responsibly", promoting activities to support victims and people affected by traffic accidents and women affected by road clearance. She highlighted that each women should be a pioneer in her family in observing traffic safety regulations as well as a communicator to encourage, support and monitor her family members to conform traffic safety rules. According to the President, the VWU would consider families as the center and target group in implementing traffic safety rules.
