Realising the task of ensuring social welfare during epidemic prevention period

20/04/2020
NDO - The National Assembly (NA) Standing Committee recently approved policies to support those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic as proposed by the Government. Accordingly, the Government will adopt a relief package worth nearly VND62 trillion (US$2.6 billion) to ensure the livelihoods of those who are living in difficulties amid the COVID-19 outbreak, including revolutionary contributors, poor households, workers who were laid off or put on leave without pay.

This decision shows that the Party and the State have paid due attention to vulnerable groups in the society, who are easily affected by this pandemic that is raging around the globe. This also shows that the Government is taking drastic measures to realise the Party’s guidelines, particularly the Politburo's Notice No. 172-TB/TW issued on March 21 on the prevention and control of COVID-19.

In the notice, the Politburo noted that the disease has seen many complicated and unpredictable developments, which have been having a comprehensive impact on the country’s economy, society, defence and security as well as people’s lives.

The Politburo thereafter asked Party committees, authorities, sectors and organisations to stay focused on preventing and controlling the epidemic with the highest sense of responsibility while taking measures to support the business community, remaining production activity, people’s lives as well preparing plans to recover the economy. They were also requested to strictly follow the directions of the Secretariat, the Secretariat’s permanent members, the Prime Minister, and the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control.

Meanwhile, citizens and the business community were encouraged to promote patriotism, compassion and social responsibility in order to join hands with functional agencies in the battle against COVID-19.

In response to the notice, the Government, ministries, departments, agencies and localities have paid great attention to mobilising all resources and adopting urgent solutions on epidemic prevention and control, which have consolidated people’s trust in the Party’s leadership, the Government’s directions and the consensus of the entire political system from central to local levels.

As the epidemic has pushed many people to the edge, the promulgation of policies to support those who are most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic will help to mitigate the impacts of the epidemic and stabilise the social order.

However, prompt implementation of the support policies and strict oversight and monitoring of their implementation are needed to prevent any lack of transparency or profiteering while ensuring that no one is left behind in the fight against COVID-19.

The timely deployment of policies supporting disadvantaged people will provide a huge source of spiritual encouragement for the country to stay committed to the COVID-19 fight. Vietnam has controlled the COVID-19 epidemic well so far and its timely response to the epidemic has been highly lauded by the international community.

This is the outcome of consensus from central to local levels as well as the Government’s prompt action to prevent the spread of the virus. It is believed with its strong determination; the country will overcome this pandemic.
