Quang Nam: Honoring Mother Legend

13/10/2006
After more than one year, Radio the Voice of Vietnam and Quang Nam People’s Committee jointly motivated and launched a competition of designing the Vietnamese Heroic Mothers’ Statue – taking archetype of Vietnamese heroic mother Nguyen Thi Thu.

Quang Nam Art Council selected the sketch of sculptor Dinh Gia Thang. The construction of the Vietnamese Heroic Mothers’ Statue, as expected, will be started at the middle of August 2006 in Tam Phu commune, Tam Ky district, Quang Nam province.

The statue is a bust attached to an artificial stone block which is made of hard sandstone and difficult to be worn out. Mother’s statue juts out enough to create a prominent point from the block.

The work covers a total area of 42,000 square meters belonging to Nui Chua zone, Tam Phu commune, Tam Ky town, Quang Nam province. The designed height of Mother’s statue is about 15-18 meters (including the base layer of 3m high).

According to Mrs. Ho Thi Thanh Lam, Vice President of Quang Nam People’s Committee, Chairwoman of Art Council, the sketch of sculptor Dinh Gia Thang is chosen because it represents well the general image of the Vietnamese Heroic Mother. This statue has a gentle, simple, and nice face and basically meets the demands of archetype of Vietnamese heroic mother Nguyen Thi Thu.

This is a national work of great meaning and volume. Sculptor Dinh Gia Thang might bear psychological pressure and face with difficulties during the construction. However, we can be assured that the Vietnamese Heroic Mothers’ Statue will be built successfully in response to the expectation of the people through out the country.
