On October 10th, the prize-giving ceremony and the photography exhibition opening for "Rural Women & Sustainable Development" were held at the Vietnamese Women's Museum. Organized by the United Nations Agency for Gender Equality and Empowerment for Women (UN Women) with the support of the Australian Embassy and the Canadian Embassy in Vietnam, the contest and exhibition aims to promote the contribution of rural women to sustainable development through photography.

Attending the event were Ms. Eliza Fernandez (Head of UN Women's Office in Vietnam), Ms. Kellie Raab (First secretary of the Australian Embassy in Vietnam), Mr. Robert Bissett (Provisional Representative of the Canada Embassy in Vietnam), Ms. Nguyen Hai Van (Director of the Vietnamese Women's Museum), representatives of the Ministry, committees, and the press agencies in Vietnam.

The photography contest for "Rural Women & Sustainable Development" was launched on International Women's Day on March 8th, 2018. In three months, the organizers received more than 1,000 photos from 151 authors. The photographs show an unique but equally authentic view of the authors on the contribution of women in economic development and equality between women and men in the rural areas. After the competition, the organizers selected 40 excellent photos and awarded the first, second and third prize for the authors. The first prize went to Mr. Giang Son Dong with the photo “Patching fish net”. Second prize went to Mr. Quang Ba Hai with the photo "A new joyful day". Third prize went to Ms. Le Thi Kim Lien with the photo "Old beauty". Finally, the “People’s Choice” prize went to Mr Vu Minh Duc with the photo "Floods in the neighborhood".

Speaking at the ceremony, Ms. Eliza Fernandez, Head of UN Women's Office in Vietnam, said "We believe that photography is a powerful tool to raise awareness and to trigger positive development in society. Looking at all of the entries, we see positive changes regarding the empowerment of rural Vietnamese women”.

Giang Son Dong who won the first prize and also had four other works exhibited at the exhibition said: "Women are always the inspiration for all types of art including photography. My photos were taken from all over the country. I find a considerable distance between the lives of rural women and the city. I want to show this in my pictures”.

Being exhibited in the great hall of the Vietnamese Women’s Museum, a place which preserves the culture and history of Vietnamese women, these photos truly honor the contribution of rural women in the development of the country.

The exhibition will be showcased from October 10th to November 10th at the great hall of the Vietnamese Women's Museum.
