09/01/2006
More than 1.6 million jobs were generated across the country in the past twelve months, marking a year-on-year increase of 3%, according to the Labour and Employment Department under the Ministry of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs.

The total number of workers in Vietnam in 2005 was over 44 million, up 2.6% against last year.

Sectors recording high employment rates included industry, construction, trade and services.

The unemployment rate in urban areas dropped by 0.3% to 5.3% as compared with last year.

In 2005, untrained workers accounted for 75.2% of the country's total workforce.

The Ministry will continue supplementing labour policies and regimes and removing barriers for all sectors to join in economic development and job creation, with the aim of generating employment for 1.6 million workers in 2006.

The Ministry will co-operate with local authorities to open vocational training courses for workers in rural areas, demobbed soldiers, young minority people and labour in urbanised areas. (VNA)
