National marks Children's Day with focus on needy families

Cities and provinces around the country yesterday celebrated Children's Day, which falls tomorrow, and inaugurated the Action Month of Children campaign.

In Hanoi, Vice State President Truong My Hoa participated in a ceremony conducted by the Association of Disabled Children and Prudential company and offered VND10mil and four gift boxes to children with disabilities in Xa Dan School.


The association and the Prudential company also presented 200 gifts to 100 deaf and 50 blind children.


Over the last 12 years, the association has developed a network of 22 Save the Children with Disabilities centres in 16 cities and provinces.


In the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau, the provincial Committee for Population, Family and Children opened a summer vacation camp for the three-month long summer holidays for children.


Other than various activities planned, the committee will send health workers and willing children to give health check-ups for poor and disadvantaged children in remote areas and conduct cultural and sports activities.


At the ceremony, the committee presented 240 gifts to disabled children, orphans and poor students.

In the northern province of Yen Bai, the provincial authorities presented gifts to disadvantaged children and poor students who excelled in academics.


During the Action Month for Children and Family Day, the provincial Committee for Population, Family and Children will conduct programmes to increase awareness o­n the Law o­n Child Care, Protection and Education.


By late May, provincial organisations and individuals had contributed more than VND90mil to the provincial Save the Children Fund, local authorities said.


The central province of Nghe An also conducted programmes to mark the Children's Day.


On the occasion, Nghe An Save the Children Fund offered gifts to more than 200 kids who were provided treatment at the Paediatrics Hospital in Nghe An.
