National Assembly discusses draft of Gender Equality Law

On June, 2nd 2006, in a meeting session, presided over by Deputy Chairman of National Assembly Nguyen Phuc Thanh, members of National Assembly debated the draft of Gender Equality Law.

Discussion focused o­n the following topics: the necessity to promulgate a Law of Gender Equality; name of the law; sphere of correction; structure; basic principles in gender equality; gender equality in societyand in family; provisional measures to promote gender equality; retired age of male and female laborers; ensuring gender equality in building normative act law and defining quota of female representation in the National Assembly, People’s Council and attending authority; government management bodies toward gender equality.

 

Debated to promulgate the Law of Gender Equality, almost all participants were unanimous in the contents of the statement and name of the Law. All participants said the name “Law of Gender Equality” is meaningful, expressing scientific features and corresponding with international integration trends.

 

In regards to retirement age: majority ideas agree to the option which states: to regulate the same retired age for both male and female cadres, civil servants and workers. Toward the females, if they have aspiration to retire earlier 1 to 5 years, their rate of salary would not be subtracted as they retire ahead. Government regulates retired age in some specific career. This affirms every citizen to have equality rights in every aspect, such as the rights to work, the rights to get jobs as regulated in clause # 63 and # 55 in the 1992 Constitution, and clause # 5 in Law of Labor as. This also mobilizes women labors who have good mental and physical health to continue their contribution to social insurance fund; expressing pre-eminent policies of the Party, Government, creating favorable conditions for women labors to actively choose a suitable time for their retirement

 

Governmental management in gender equality attracted many members of the National Assembly. They said that it is necessary to have a governmental body which helps the State with unified government management in gender equality at the macro level.
