Mother and Children Health Day

21/09/2017
On the morning of August 19th 2017, the Vietnam Women’s Union (VWU) organized the event “Maternal and Child Health Care”, commemorating the week of “Breastfeeding and Mother and Child Care Month”. The event took place at the Vietnamese Women’s Museum (VWM) for pregnant women, women who intend to have a baby in the future, and new mothers.
A variety of activities were held at the event such as: workshops, an exhibition fair, availablehealth consultancy, and entertainment for mothers and children. Outstanding stories about traditional breastfeeding practices over many generations of Vietnamese women were told with a display of hundreds of photos at the exhibition “Breastfeeding – The Source of Love”. Its message is a powerful affirmation that breast milk is a gift and a precious source of nutrition for children.

The workshop themed “Creatinga favourable environment towards caring for new mothers and new-borns” brought to it many experiences and knowledge relating to nutrition needed for raising healthy children, taking care of pregnant women and new mothers. In particular, the stress experienced by new mothers was raised at the workshop relating to reasons why and methods forprevention which were experienced by new families.

Addressing the event, Madam Tran Thi Thu Huong, Vice Head of VWU, said “With this event, we would like to see that more and more people will be concerned with the spiritual as well as physical care for new mothers and encourage breastfeeding. Not only should mothers know the importance of caring for themselves, and eliminate obsolete harsh abstinence practices, but also people around them being attentive and caring for their mental health;by identifying unusual signs in new mothers as well as sharing and supporting post-partum depression,so that they may overcome this illness, and have enough milk for the newborn during the first year of life.”

In 2017, the theme of the World Breastfeeding Week “Sustaining Breastfeeding Together” reinforces the importance of breastfeeding and the role of governmental organizations and individuals, to encourage women to sustain their newborn by their milk totally. VWU carried out projects effectively to propagate, support and enhance knowledge for VWU’s members in all 63 provinces.

This event commemorated both Breastfeeding Week and was linked to the Birth (a secondary topic of the theme “Women in Family”) of the Museum’s permanent exhibition to showcase the valuable traditions of raising and taking care of the children of Vietnamese women and Vietnamese families during the past, and up until now.
