On March 7, the Vietnam Women’s Union (VWU) celebrated the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day and the 1970th anniversary of Trung Sisters (Hai Ba Trung) uprising.

The meeting was attended by Head of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Mass Mobilisation, Ha Thi Khiet; Vice Chairwoman of the National Assembly, Tong Thi Phong; State Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan; Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) Central Committee, Huynh Dam; and nearly 700 outstanding women delegates representing heroic mothers, people’s armed women heroes and heroic women labourers.

In her speech, VWU Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Thanh Hoa reviewed the struggle of women all over the world and the patriotic solidarity and creativity of Vietnamese women in the struggle against foreign invaders for national liberation, construction and defense.

The second International Women‘s Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1910 established March 8 as International Women’s Day after women united internationally to struggle for an eight hour working day with equal work.

In Vietnam, International Women’s Day is also attached to the Trung Sisters (Hai Ba Trung) uprising and is the chance for Vietnamese women to uphold their tradition of “Heroism, courage, faithfulness and diligence”.

This year, International Women’s Day is celebrated under the UN’s theme ”Equal Rights, Equal Opportunities: Progress for All.” The Vietnamese Party and State ensure progress and gender equality for women through the Law on Gender Equality and reinforcing the State mechanism on gender equality and women’s advancement, said Mrs Hoa.

At the meeting, Ha Thi Khiet praised the significant contributions to national construction and defense by Vietnamese women. In every field, Vietnamese women always perform their role well as wives and mothers, Mrs Khiet emphasised.
