Letter from the Vietnam Women’s Union to EC regarding the anti-dumping case against Vietnamese shoes

21/03/2006
On March 6, 2006, the President of Vietnam Women’s Union sent a letter to the EC Trade Commissioner Mr. Peter Mandelson calling for EC good will in solving the anti-dumping case against Vietnamese shoes with leather upper exported to EU market.

On behalf of 13 million women members all over the country, VWU proposes EC to review the investigation in an equal and proper manner, thus securing the good image of EU in the hearts of the Vietnamese people.

The letters says “Consequences caused by the EC anti-dumping investigation will remarkably reduce living quality of women laborers in leather shoe industry as well as their children and families. The investigation will also partially hamper current development and social improvements programs sponsored by EU”.

The EC’s carrying out of anti-dumping investigation has damaged the Vietnamese leather shoe production and exportation. The number of orders has seen a decline since quarter 4 of 2005 and especially since the beginning of 2006 as overseas trading partners hold their order in waiting for EC primary conclusions. Several foreign invested companies are considering the moving of their factories out of Vietnam and look for other opportunities in the region.
