IUCN to continue environmental assistance to Vietnam

IUCN Director General Julia Marton Lefevre made the pledge at her meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem, in Hanoi, o­n June 6, where she also emphasised the need to raise public awareness of the need for environment protection – a key factor in boosting economic growth.

At the meeting, Deputy PM Khiem thanked the IUCN for its technical assistance to the building of strategies and national programmes o­n environment protection and sustainable development and its participation in environmental initiatives throughout the country.

He stated that the Vietnamese Government has realised the importance of environment protection and development and regards it as o­ne of the three key factors in spurring the country to success.

Highlighting the IUCN's leading role in nature conservation, the Deputy PM expressed his hope that the organisation would continue to assist the country in protecting its diverse ecosystems
