Diversifying activities and enhancing the role of Women’s Union

In the last 6 months, WU at all levels carried out a lot of activities to celebrate Public Holidays such as the 98^th International Women’s Day; 1968 years of Hai Ba Trung’s uprising. Other movements which were also received much attention from WU members at all levels,brought great efficiency and meaningful results such as “Women nation-wide practise hygiene take safe food for the health of their family and community”; communicating and mobilizing women to followState laws and policies, contributing actively to the cause of socio - economic development with the contents of social evil prevention, fire fighting and prevention, prevention of disease o­n cattle and poultry, Law o­n Children Care and Protection, Law o­n Gender Equality, Population Ordinance. These activities involved the participation of 212,568 women. The communication o­n clean water and environmental hygiene also carried out widely. The provincial WU together with the Natural Resource – Environment Dept organized a contest o­n “Learning about environmental protection,” conducted activities to respond to the National Week for drinking water and environmental hygiene has been and the World Environment Day. Healthcare for Mothers and children as well as training o­n child’s bring up have been promoted by the W.U as this is a useful way to help women build happy and progressive family.

Especially, the activity of supporting women to develop their economy gained great results. In the first six months, WU at all levels mobilized 2,598 better-off women to provide 3,467 difficult women with over 3 billion VND as loans without interest. Also in this period, WU established 34 new mutual assistant groups that mobilized over 8 billion VND to provide loans to 3,506 women, set up 177 new women’s savings groups that mobilized over 17 billions VND, as savings which provided loans to 18,817 women; established 17 groups with 855 members that borrowed loans from the Agriculture and Rural Development Bank with the total amount of over 5 billions VND, 13 groups that borrowed over 30.2 billions VND from the Social Policy Bank and provided loans to 29,191 women. Up to now, WU at all levels provided loans to 23,392 women with the total amount of 27.852 billion VND (excluded loans from the banks and donors). Other activities such as mutual support, art performance and sports have been also held by WU. Besides, Dong Nai WU at all levels has granted 589 Nguyen Thi Đinh scholarships with the total amount of 131 billion VND, 309 schooling awards, raised fund to build and offer 24 houses and repair 3 other houses for its members,who are facing difficult situation.

The activities and movements raised by provincial WU have involved widely its staffs, members and women at the locality. According to Ms.Nguyen Thi Ngoc Suong – Vice President of Đong Nai WU, “WU has the function of gathering and uniting women; operates at the aim of honoring and promoting the role and position of women in society; helps women to improve themselves. The provincial WU always creates favorable conditions to support women for comprehensive and equal development in all fields of life, both in their families and society.
