Conferring the Merit Medal “For the Development of Women in Vietnam” on Mr. Jordan Ryan -Resident Coordinator/UNDP Resident Representative in Hanoi

On 28 Oct. 2005 Central Vietnam Women’s Union organized a ceremony to confer the Merit Medal to Mr. Jordan Ryan - Resident Coordinator/UNDP Resident Representative in Vietnam.

 

Mme. Ha Thi Khiet, member of the Party’s Central Committee, VWU President, Chairwoman of the National Committee o­n the Advancement of Women in Vietnam and Mme. Nguyen Thanh Hoa, VWU Vice-president together with representatives from international organizations in Hanoi attended the ceremony.

 

During his 7 years in Vietnam, Mr. Jordan Ryan has contributed to boosting cooperation between Vietnam and United Nations Vietnam and international donors, bringing practical benefits to the people including the women of Vietnam. Mr. Ryan was successful in introducing “rights-based approach to development” in latest UN country programme. Thanks to his efforts, United Nations Vietnam became the first and o­nly United Nations in Asia to receive funding from the US President’s Emergency Plan for Aids Relief (PEPFAR). Under Mr. Ryan’s leadership, United Nations Vietnam have paid due attention to gender equality and women’s development, including initiatives and efforts to combat HIV/AIDS - a serious threat to women, and enhanced awareness and commitment to MDGs, including the Goal of Gender Equality.

 

As a close friend of the Vietnam Women’s Union, Mr. Jordan Ryan joins VWU in many of its events. In Vietnamese and international fora he has been very vocal in his commitment to gender equality and women’s advancement, thus having a positive impact o­n other leaders and stakeholders.

 

To acknowledge these contributions, VWU has granted him with the Merit Medal “For the Development of Women in Vietnam”.
