Communication against abuse of adolescent domestic helpers
Attending the meeting were representatives of the Women’s Unions and Committees of Population, Family and Children from both the district and commune levels.
Participants shared experiences and information on anti-abuse communication activities and discussed measures to curb the abuse of adolescent domestic helpers. Ms. Le Thi Ro – member of the HCMC WU’s Standing Committee and head of Information, Education and Communication (IEC) Department – proposed the following target activities to be conducted by the HCMC Women’s
- Increase awareness-raising communication among parents, community and employers of adolescent labourers on the children’s rights, labour regulations relating to adolescents, threats and consequences of child labour.
- Encourage community’s timely detection of child abuses in order to apply appropriate intervention.
- Propose functional agencies to severely punish perpetrators who cause serious consequences and pimps of child labourers.
- Study and recommend comprehensive intervention measures for the authorities, industries, community, families and children’s origin localities to work toward the goal of stopping child labour, including child domestic labour.
- Support poor families with such measures as providing credit for income generation and job creation, scholarship and other schemes for children with the aim of stabilizing the family’s livelihood and enabling children’s schooling.
