HCM CITY — Three contestants from the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta were crowned the best singers at the annual vong co contest held by HCM City Television on Thursday.

Vong co is a musical genre featuring nostalgic tunes based on the traditional five-note musical scale.

Tran Thi Thu Van of Can Tho overcame two male contenders, An Giang’s Lu Quoc Vinh and Ben Tre’s Le Minh Hao, to claim the Golden Bell and VND35 million (US$2,000) in prize money.

She also won the Press’ Choice Award of VND10 million ($600).

Van sang Nho Bac Lieu (Missing Bac Lieu, My Homeland) and acted as the historic queen mother Duong Van Nga who relinquished her little son’s throne to a great general for the sake of the country when threatened by northern invaders in the namesake cai luong (reformed opera).

"Her performance as the queen mother was outstanding while her singing was all-round," remarked Bach Tuyet, an actress and member of the jury.

Van’s triumph came as a surprise since she had not been popular with the audience many of whom had voted for Hao in the People’s Choice Award in every round.

Hao managed to finish only third to win the Bronze Bell, behind Silver Bell winner Vinh. They won prize money respectively worth VND25 and 15 million.

Since its inception four years ago, the contest has been very popular in the south where people avidly watch its live broadcast on television.

This year saw northern contestants for the first time. The audition in Ha Noi attracted as many contestants as in southern provinces like An Giang and Ca Mau, according to the organisers.

Two contestants from the north even made it through to the final round.

An Giang’s Nguyen Thanh Can came like a breath of fresh air with his amusing-satirical vong co songs. But he seemed nervous while performing and was eliminated in the early rounds.

The final was themed "Viet Nam’s Epic History," with contestants performing music and drama celebrating the country’s heroic history and rich culture. — VNS
