Making national occupational security and hygiene ( OSH ) programmes for ASEAN countries was the theme of an international symposium opened in Hanoi on May 12 with the host Vietnam setting an example.

The two-day event, sponsored by the International Labour Organisation (ILO), drew senior officials in charge of OSH from ASEAN member Governments, China, the Republic of Korea, Japan, Mongolia and representatives of employers and employees from ASEAN.

In his opening speech, Deputy Minister of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs (MOLISA) Dam Huu Dac stressed that the Vietnamese Government and business circle have always prioritised the tasks to protect workers from labour accidents and occupational diseases as well as to ensure their labour safety and take care of their health.

Vietnam was the first Asian country to ratify Convention No.155 on occupational security and hygiene and working environment, said Dac.

He also said Vietnam was among the eight nations in the region to have promulgated the national programme on OSH with a full system of policies and regulations on the issue. He also cited a nationwide network on information and reporters on labour accidents and occupational diseases as well as a system of training and campaigning against these problems.
