Artist inspired by all types of women

Artist Bui Tien Tuan’s paintings of Vietnamese women are nothing like the traditionally demure images often seen in art galleries.

At Tu Do Gallery, Tuan is showing his best work in a new exhibition Lua (Silk), including 20 paintings in different sizes depicting women who are assertive, sexy and dynamic.

The artist uses silk, a traditional material popular in Viet Nam since 1930, to highlight his liberal ideas about art.

In most of his works, women are free from their day-to-day life preoccupations. The beauty of women in Tuan’s art is quite different from the traditional Vietnamese view. But most people, old and young, are fond of Tuan’s work.

"I find unlimited sources of inspiration in women," says the 38-year-old artist.

Some of the lighter-coloured paintings feature attractively dressed women in states of joy and sadness, and others portray beautiful women and evoke memories of love.

The show’s highlights include the paintings Nhay Voi Mat Na (Dancing With A Mask), Trich Doan Mot Cau Chuyen (A Story Excerpt) and Nang Xuan (Young Girl), in red, brown, and yellow-brown, featuring beautiful women on a variety of backgrounds.

While Nang Xuan features a rural girl, the modern beauty of urban women is highlighted in Trich Doan Mot Cau Chuyen. All of these works capture women’s dreams and passions.

"No one can turn their back on women and their beauty," he says, smiling.

Born in Hoi An, Tuan has been working as a freelance artist since he graduated from HCM City Fine Arts University in 1998.

He has had several personal and selected group exhibitions in Ha Noi, HCM City and Seoul.

The exhibition ends June 20 at 53 Ho Tung Mau Street, District 1. Paintings range from US$700 to $2,000 each.
