Winning 59,2% out of 91% of the counted ballots, Ms. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, president candidate of the Union Party was far ahead her opponent - former soccer star George Weah and became President

Right after the National Election Committee announced the preliminary ballot count,Ms. Ellen Johnson Sirleafdeclared victory as the first female President of Africa and expressed her commitment to carry out a reformprogram for country.

 

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, a 67 - year - old "Iron Lady" studied at the Harvard University, United States. She is an experienced politician andused to be Liberia Finance Minister.

 

Ms. Ellen hopes that her victory will be an encouragement for women in Liberia in particular and in Africa in general to take more active participation in social and political life of their respective country. She also promised tooffer Mr. George Weah an important post in her government.
