Activities for Increasing Gender Equality in Dong Nai province

Dong Nai creates many favorable conditions for women’s contribution in all areas

Women in Dong Nai province account for 53% of the population.

 

They are also the labor force undertaking many types of jobs. The contribution of Dong Nai women has partly determined the role of women in the socio-economic development process.

 

Women have received more attention and assistance from society in terms of protecting their legitimate rights and interests as well as having effective involvement in social work. In Dong Nai, women have participated in many areas including traditional o­nes so far dominated by men. Especially, the leadership roles and social management positions of women has improved remarkably.

 

Over the past 5 years, collaborating with branches and Women’s Unions at all levels, the Provincial Department for the Advancement of Women has created jobs for 214,330 female labors. This has contributed to reducing the unemployment rate to 3.4%. 90% of poor families have received loans for business investment and have therefore escaped from poverty. At the same time, Women’s Unions at all levels have used their reputation to guarantee with banks to enable more than 30,000 rounds of poor women to borrow loans for business development. The total received being nearly 100 billion Dong. Illiteracy eradication for women below 40 years old is 98%; the percentage of female students at school is high and the drop out of female students has been sharply reduced. There is an increase of 50% of female staff who have been trained in professional skills. However, the objective of improved health care for women is a concern. Recently, the percentage of women accessing medical services was nearly 98%. The objective of increasing the percentage of women in leadership mechanisms is higher than before. The educational, medical, socio-economic agencies and enterprises having 30% of female labors and almost having women in leadership positions. Capacity building for the advancement of women is effective. Up to now, 11 out of 11 districts/cities; 171 communities and more than 20 sub-departments have established the units for the advancement of women and had stable operation./.
