219th anniversary of Ngoc Hoi-Dong Da victory celebrated nationwide

A festival was held at the Dong Da Park in Dong Da district, Hanoi, on February 11 to mark the 219th anniversary of Ngoc Hoi-Dong Da Victory led by national hero Nguyen Hue.

President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee Huynh Dam, Deputy Minister of National Defence Sen. Lieut. Gen. Nguyen Huy Hieu and President of the Vietnam Women’s Union Nguyen Thanh Hoa were among those present at the annual event.

The celebration started with an incense offering ceremony in commemoration of national hero Nguyen Hue who proclaimed himself Emperor Quang Trung and those who laid down their life for national independence 219 years ago.


Chairman of the Dong Da District People’s Committee Tran Duc Hoc delivered a speech, highlighting the triumph o­n the fifth day of the Year of the Rooster in 1789 as a combination of patriotism, the spirit of national independence and freedom, the traditional unity and bravery of the Vietnamese people.


The victory of Ngoc Hoi-Dong Da went down into the nation’s history as an immortal epic of the struggle for national construction and defence, he stressed.


A series of art performances and traditional games such as dragon and gong dances, martial arts and human chess then took place at the festival.


The Ngoc Hoi-Dong Da victory is celebrated every year to honour the great contributions by ancestors. This year’s festival also included many traditional art performances and other activities such as human chess competition and martial art performances.


Participants in the festival were impressed by lion dances depicting tactics and campaigns launched by talented leader Nguyen Hue and soldiers against 29,000 Qing invaders in 1789. Art performances depicted the glorious victory which won national independence and reunification by hero Nguyen Hue and princess Ngoc Han.


On the same day, many activities were also held in Ho Chi Minh City and Binh Dinh province to mark the 219th anniversary of Ngoc Hoi-Dong Da Victory.
