17th Gender Consultants’ Network Meeting

On December 5th, the National Committee for the Advancement of Women in Vietnam hosted the 17th Gender Consultants’ Network Meeting with the participation of nearly 50 officials, lecturers and experts on gender and secretaries of the Department for the Advancement of Women from Ministries/sectors...

The Meeting showcased information o­n activities related to gender equality internally and externally, especially 2 reports “Analysis o­n women’s status within Vietnam’s labor market” by Doctor Sunhwa Lee from Washington Institute of Women Policy Research” and “Survey o­n Gender – issues related to health in Lao Cai and Nam Dinh Province” by Doctor Dau Thi Hai Ha – Vice Head of the Department of Health Care Human Resources of the Institute for Policy and Strategy o­n Health Care.

 

With the topic “Analysis o­n women’s status within Vietnam’s labor market”, Doctor Sunhwa Lee highlighted some information necessary for the policy planning o­n labor and salary of women in particular and laborer in general. For example, women in the rural areas work more than women in the urban areas but the number of weeks of working of women in the urban is more than in the rural areas, men do less housework than women, especially in the urban and men spend more time in housework than women, women account for a huge number in service, sale or manual labor, women’s average income is lower than men’s and women in the rural areas are paid with lower salary the women in the urban... Solutions to these situations given out by Doctor Sunhwa Lee are equality in job opportunities, enhancing knowledge and training skill for women and protection of interests related to jobs.

 

With the report “Survey o­n Gender – issues related to health in Lao Cai and Nam Dinh Province” by Doctor Dau Thi Hai Ha, participants are supplied with information o­n the circumstances of gender inequality and health in 2 communes of Lao Cai and Nam Dinh Province. The solutions are to change the whole main thought of the society to ensure its relevance and adaptation to the need for health and concern of all members of the society, especially party members, authority and mass organizations. In addition, there is a must to conduct gender mainstreaming aimed at promoting women’s status...
