“The strong helps the weak” in Phu Nhuan – Cham village

17/05/2016
Phu Nhuan is a Cham village in Phuoc Thuan commune, Ninh Phuoc district, Ninh Thuan province with more than 2,000 residents. The majority of women there live on farming. In recent years, the economic life of women - headed households has been developed in a relatively sustainable way thanks to the innovation of the village WU in its operation methods and contents.

By involving WU members as a core factor, the village WU has established 9 groups of 10 women each who have opinions and ideas in common. The group’s members contribute monthly savings of VND 50,000 to the group’s savings fund which is used as revolving loans for difficult members or supporting households in difficulties. From these small contributions, up to now, the groups’ leaders have mobilized VND 180 million (about 8000USD) for the revolving loans, enabling many households to develop their economy.

In order to contribute to the poverty reduction in rural areas, the village WU has also encouraged the groups to exchange labor, voluntarily support each other with rice and corn seeds and workdays. In particular, with the motto "the strong helps the weak", those who have experiences in production and business share to others not only grains of rice but also primary lessons in doing business and in buildingwealthy and happy families. The model has shown its effectiveness and helped many families escape from poverty in a sustainable way. For example, Ms. Ngu Thi Dieu’s family was a poor household. Upon participating in the group, she could buy a cow from the group loan andexchange labor with other group members. Her family has escaped from poverty, built a spacious house and is maintaining a herd of 3 cows.

In addition, the groups under the village WU have been actively participating in charity work, helping the elderly and disadvantaged children. In 2015, they supported 14 poor people with a total amount of nearly VND 5 million and over 200 kg of rice; participated in the campaign to raise Gratitude Fund, Fund for the Poor, gifts for the youth leaving home to join the army and for poor but studious students ...

In the coming time, the village WU will establish another 3 groups of women having ideas in commonfor the purpose of gathering women members to discuss the ways of doing business, saving, improving their lives by practical actions, participating in the community construction, new countryside building and successfully building up cultural, civilized and prosperous village of Phu Nhuan.
